Islamabad:April 24:In connection with the Earth Day 2016, the Environment Sciences Department of International Islamic University, Islamabad, organised an awareness raising seminar and tree plantation event at the H-9 Campus of IIU. Larger number of students, faculty members and guests attended this event. Zafar Bakhtawari, Vice President of Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Patron in chief of Mission Green Islamabad Campaign was the Chief Guest on this occasion. In his address, Bakhtawari said that global warming, ozone depletion and pollution are the burning issues. Climate change is a reality and it is affecting each one of us. If we want to make a transition to a low-carbon society and avoid the harmful environmental, social and economic impacts of unchecked climate change, all segments of society must be mobilized to play its role. He said a simple solution to these problems lies in increasing the green cover by planting more and more trees. On this occasion he formally announced the launching of Mission Green Islamabad as a public tree plantation campaign. He said that Mission Green Islamabad has a noble cause to increase the green cover of this city which us under threat due to increase in population and developmental activities. He invited everyone to be part of the movement of Mission Green Islamabad. Dr. Irfan Khan, Chairman of Environmental Sciences Department of IIU, Aftab Rana, President of Sustainable Tourism Foundation and other speakers also addressed the audience on this occasion. Later, Bakhtawari, Dr. Irfan Khan and. Aftab Rana jointly inaugurated the tree plantation drive by planting a sapling of Jasmine tree.
